Natural Beauty

“… whenever any style of ornament commands universal admiration, it will always be found to be in accordance with the laws which regulate the distribution of form in nature.”

Owen Jones, The Grammar of Ornament

Active in 19th-century Britain, architect and designer Owen Jones championed design principles that emphasized color, pattern, and harmony. He looked to what he considered the best examples of ornamentation throughout history to establish a modern theory of design – a theory heavily influenced by nature, especially plant life.

The following material provides convincing evidence of Jones’s belief that designs inspired by or created from plants – both literally and figuratively – yield stunning results.
